GTA 6 brought Tom Petty’s song to the top of the charts

Tom Petty - Grand Theft Auto 6

On December 5, 2023, Rockstar Games showcased the trailer for “Grand Theft Auto 6,” a long-awaited follow-up to their 2013 release. The game marks a return to Vice City, a setting not explored since 2002’s “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” and introduces a female lead character named Lucia for the first time in the series. The new installment is expected to launch in 2025.

The soundtrack of the trailer featured “Love Is A Long Road” by Tom Petty from his 1989 album “Full Moon Fever.” This inclusion significantly spiked the song’s popularity, with a remarkable 36,979% increase in Spotify downloads within a day, and the song also reached the seventh position on the Billboard music charts.

“Love Is a Long Road,” a track from Tom Petty’s debut solo album in 1989, “Full Moon Fever,” achieved notable recognition despite its limited release. It was the B-side of “Free Fallin'” in the UK and wasn’t issued as an individual single, yet it still managed to secure considerable radio play. In the US, the song made an impressive impact, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.

The creation of this rock anthem involved co-writer and guitarist Mike Campbell, who drew inspiration from his passion for motorcycles. Campbell described the song as embodying the essence of a motorcycle’s gear shifts. This track was later included in the 2000 double-disc collection “Anthology: Through the Years” and the 1995 box set “Playback.”
